Twilight - Acrylic on paper

About the Artist

Sandra Neumann Wilderman was born in Milwaukee , Wisconsin and lived in the Midwest until 2003 when she moved to Gilbert , Arizona . Wilderman knew she wanted to be an artist since she was in elementary school while drawing maps and creating covers for her reports. She studied at the Toledo Museum of Art and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Northern Illinois University.

Wilderman's work has won several awards and she has exhibited her art in national, juried shows including Women's Works in Woodstock , Illinois and numerous group exhibitions including The 4 th Annual Chicago Art Open in Chicago , Illinois . Her solo exhibits include the Triangle Gallery at the Old Town Arts Center in Chicago , Illinois and The Gallery in the Library at the Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Chandler , Arizona.

Wilderman's influences include Paul Jenkins, Georgia O'Keeffe and Helen Frankenthaler. Her approach to painting is to pour layers of liquid acrylics onto wet paper or canvas creating biomorphic shapes and linear sharpness. Her earliest poured paintings are bold and abstract followed by her atmospheric illusion series. After 9/11 she began to experiment with various techniques, formats and compositions and developed the symbolic paintings, which include her flag, tower and cross series. Three years ago, Wilderman started weaving two poured paintings together to create a new, geometric and textural composition. Currently, she is also combining the processes of pouring and painting on canvas.

Artist Statement

After painting with watercolors for more than fifteen years I find the spontaneity, the fluidity and the stylistic eclecticism of pouring acrylics to be a freeing and spiritual experience. And it is through this process that I have found my voice.
